CHACAI

.

At over 1,000 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Maipo River gorge, lies the Chacai ravine. It gives rise to one of our most valuable vineyard sites, known as La Negra—a perfect blend of stones originating from this slope and those from the glacial terrace.

Located on the border between Pirque and San José de Maipo—the easternmost district of the Maipo Valley—this vineyard has the privilege of combining soils of rounded stones from the Maipo River’s alluvial terraces with a partial intrusion of fractured colluvial stones originating from the Andean slopes. The vineyard yields approximately 1.8 kilos per vine, or about 6,200 kg per hectare. The cool nighttime temperatures of San Juan, combined with the proximity of the mountains—which allow direct sunlight to reach the site only later in the morning—slow the growing cycle, adding freshness to these mountain-grown grapes.

In Mapudungun, the language of the native Mapuche people, CHACAI means black thorn, a variety of acacia commonly found in the Maipo Valley. This modest tree is a native species highly resistant to drought; it helps protect and improve soils, provides shelter and food for local wildlife, and is an important component of the Mediterranean scrubland—one of the country’s most threatened ecosystems. A fitting symbol of CASAFÈVRE’s values.
